A Woman of Destiny
After a private plane crash the prior week killed Presidential candidate Eduardo Campo and several of his staff, on whose ticket Marina was the VP candidate, she was selected to run instead as the candidate of the Brazilian Socialist Party. She faces off against incumbent President Dilma Rousseff and Aécio Neves, a favorite of the business sector.
Marina and her staff were supposed to be on that plane, but decided at the last minute to take a commercial flight. Brazilian culture is such that there is widespread suspicion that the crash was not an accident, and the impression that Marina is now suddenly a woman of destiny. The word on the street in Brazil is that she will win.
Marina is the daughter of rubber tappers and was deeply involved for years with the struggles of the murdered Chico Mendes and the Amazonian rubber tappers who fought for sustainability and justice, Marina’s core values. She ran for President on the Green Party ticket in 2010, winning an astonishing 19% of the first round of voting.
Politics Grounded in Sustainability and Justice
Marina’s Bioneers keynote offered an extraordinary vision of a new kind of politics grounded in sustainability and social and economic justice. Her participation was made possible by a generous grant from Jeffrey Bronfman for her travel costs.
We had the chance to visit with her and explore the possibility of bringing Bioneers to Brazil, about which she was enthusiastic. We helped arrange an important meeting with her during the conference with Danny Glover and representatives from Amazon Watch and the Indigenous Environmental Network. Listen to
If Marina wins, it will be a game-changer for the global politics of sustainability and justice. Stay tuned––subscribe to our email updates for the latest on this and other stories of bioneers in the news.
