Debbie Raphael manages the city and county of San Francisco's Toxics Reduction and Green Building programs. She works with government bodies across the country as well as with school districts, businesses and community groups to protect public health and the environment by finding safer alternatives to the use of toxic chemicals. From pesticides to cleaning products to building materials, Debbie is responsible for helping decision makers find the answer to the central questions behind precautionary thinking: Is this product or process really necessary? Is there a safer alternative? How can we minimize harm?
