Humanity is using nature at a rate that our planet simply cannot support,
and the results are seen in the loss of habitats, species, and in the Earth’s ability to sustain human life. Our extractive and destructive systems must be slowed or stopped for us to survive.
Against this background, a burgeoning movement is spreading around the world, working to transform and protect against the systems that facilitate ecological devastation. The Rights of Nature movement focuses on assigning legal rights to natural entities. In the same way societies create legal systems which assign legal rights to citizens to protect them from myriad harmful activities, Rights of Nature initiatives inherently protect nature from harm or require payment of damages when harm is done.
When you sign up for our Rights of Nature email series, you’ll get a quick, accessible crash course. We’ll send you an email every day for a week, each featuring a story, interview, or resource that provides context and real-world stories from this movement’s groundbreaking leaders.
