Action Initiatives
California is leading the innovative way with mandatory K-12 environmental education. We’re partnering with our long-term esteemed partner the Biomimicry Institute to help bring biomimicry education into the California K-12 curriculum. Biomimicry is “innovation inspired by nature” with literally billions of evolutionary solutions all around us in nature’s designs and principles. Imagine young school children learning from the genius of nature how to imitate nature’s solutions for a restored world, inspired by reverence, awe and humility and the beautiful part people can play in enhancing the web of life. Rights of Nature legal frameworks overturn the governing paradigm of nature as property, and give nature legal standing for its intrinsic value, on whose behalf people serve as trustees. This framework and growing movement reflect a fundamentally Indigenous worldview of interdependence, kinship and reciprocity. We’re honored to work directly with the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund to respectfully offer these legal workshops to Native American communities across the U.S. This is the last stand for many landscapes, and this is an invaluable tool that also shifts the very way we view our relationship with nature. The 3-D Ocean Farming developed by Bren Smith’s GreenWave Initiative sequesters large amounts of carbon, produces very high yields of healthy foods, and provides an economic democracy model to support localized food economies. Farms totaling the size of Washington State could feed the world, while relieving up to 90% of pressures on our radically overstressed farmlands. We’re working with GreenWave to help bring 3-D Ocean Farming to California – the world’s sixth largest economy – because what happens in California doesn’t stay in California.
